Glossary
Bespoke
Bespoke derives from the word “bespeak” meaning to ask for something. It originates from Saville Row where a customer would “bespeak” or choose a measure of cloth. Today, the term is usually associated with tailored clothing, made at a customer’s request and to the customer’s precise measurement. In our case, we make your shirts according to the exact colour combinations you specify so that you can “tailor” the colour of every single shirt panel if you so desire.
Colourways
This describes the different colour combinations that are available. For example, if a shirt is shown as available in blue with white stripes or red with blue stripes, that means it comes in two colourways.
Denier
Denier is the mass in grams per 9000 metres of the fabric. So, 9000m of one denier fibre weighs 1 gram. In this way, denier gives us a comparative measure of the weight and thickness of a fibre.
Fleece
Fleece is an insulating fabric made form knitted synthetic fibres. Fleece is usually very soft, warm, and highly breathable drying quickly.
Handle
The handle of a fabric in a textiles context describes the way it feels to the touch. For example, if a fabric feels soft, it is described as having “a soft handle”. The handle can be derived either from a mix of some of the properties of the yarn used to make up the fabric, or, less frequently, the use of special finishing processes once the fabric has been woven.
Overlocking
An overlock stitch is a zigzag stitch which is sewn along the edge of one or two pieces of fabric to bind the edges of the cloth together and prevent fraying.
If the seam is stretched and put under stress, the overlocking should hold owing to the special protective zigzag shape of the stitches.
